  • In just 10 seasons in the major leagues, “Iron Man” McGinnity worked 3,441 innings and won 246 games. During the month of August in 1903, he pitched and won both ends of a doubleheader three times; he accomplished the feat two other times in his career.

    He pitched another 3,821 innings and won another 235 games in a minor-league career both before and after that one glorious decade in the majors.

    And to his dying day in 1929, Joe McGinnity couldn’t quite fathom why so many other pitchers weren’t just as durable as he was.
